Backyard Sheds Reimagined

Necessity is the mother of invention. No wonder the backyard shed has evolved to be so much more than a place to hang a rake and shovel. As many of us seek to expand our livable square footage, the shed becomes a solution. It can be tailored for today’s new work-from-home needs, fashioned for quiet time and relaxation or simply for having fun. From a design point of view, you’re only limited by your imagination: choose your ideal materials, style, details and décor statement. Remember that today’s multifunctional sheds can also be outfitted not just for summertime but for year-round enjoyment. Now that’s living!

Make Your Custom Shed an All-Season Space

Upgrade your outdoor room for year-round comfort and you’ll truly have expanded your indoor-outdoor living space. The requirements? Electrical and internet service will make your garden-based work area or studio shed fully productive so ensure you have the right permits before getting those utilities installed. For climate-control, insulation is key, and simple to install (see below). For year-round use, you might also consider a small portable air conditioner. Simply finishing the room with great lighting, a fresh coat of paint and thoughtful decorating will guarantee enjoyment for years to come. Here’s How.

Install Insulation

After electrical is installed (if desired) in your shed, it’s time for insulation. Unroll blanket insulation (typically 15" wide and 3 ½" thick) and cut it to lengths that fit between studs. When handling insulation, always wear protective clothing, covered shoes, safety glasses, mask and gloves.

Attach Vapour Barrier

If your shed is to be heated, you will need a vapour barrier for the walls. For colder climates, the vapour barrier needs to be installed on the warm side of the wall.

Caulk all Seams

Seal all seams of the vapour barrier where it meets the shed’s floor and ceiling framing with caulking.

Staple Vapour Barrier in Place

Use a staple gun and secure the vapour barrier in place along all interior studs and corners.

Tape all Seams

Use sheathing tape to cover and seal any draft gaps in the installed vapour barrier, such as around any electrical boxes.

Raise the Walls

For budget-minded finishing, use low density fibreboard for walls. Install, starting with the ceiling, and ensure ends of sheets fall at the centre of studs. Next: the walls. With fibreboard up, priming and sanding follow.
