One of the most important steps before installing a new tub is to measure your bathroom and tub alcove to ensure you are purchasing a suitable tub. If space permits, you could purchase a larger tub. And by changing the configuration, you might just be able to afford the tub of your dreams.

Piping location

Before installing a new bathtub, check the plumbing, especially the drains. For example, if the drain opening is on the right, you should choose a tub with the drain on the right.

The style

Material 

The most popular bathtub materials are porcelain, fibreglass, acrylic and cast iron. Each has its own benefits, aesthetics and price points, so the material you choose depends on your needs, taste and budget.

Comfort Features 

If you love to unwind at the end of the day with a luxurious soak, you may also want to consider features like headrests, arm rests, comfortable seating and spa jets.  

Shelving 

Depending on your routine, you may also want to ensure the bathtub has enough space or shelving to hold soap, shampoo, face cloths and other bath essentials. 

Faucet Style 

The faucet you choose will depend on the configuration of your tub and existing faucet. However, there are still different styles to browse that range from classic to contemporary to complement your new bathtub.  

Weight 

Before installing a new bathtub, it’s important to confirm that your bathroom flooring can withstand the weight of the tub you’re considering.

Installing a New Tub

Once you find a tub that meets your needs you can start the installation process. The following is a simplified version of the steps involved in installing a new bathtub to help give you a general idea of how you can do-it-yourself.

Prep the Space

Before starting, shut off the water to the bathroom and/or the entire house. You may also need to remove the toilet, sink or other fixtures if they are in the way.

Remove and Disconnect Drain Lines

Unscrew the overflow valve cover plate and pull out any drain assembly. Disconnect the drain flange using a tub drain extractor. Remove the tub spout, then disconnect the waste and overflow unit from underneath the tub. 

Tub drains are not always the same, so these steps may vary depending on your bathtub.

Removing the Tub

Removing a bathtub is a two-step process. Be sure to wear eye protection and have a helper present for safety. 

First, remove any surrounding tiling, dry wall and trim, caulk and moulding before prying the bathtub away from the wall. Next, have one person lift up one end of the tub while the other slides a 2x4 plank underneath to keep it raised. Repeat on the other side, then slide the bathtub out using the 2x4s as skids.

Install the Plumbing

The overflow and drain flange need to be installed before the new bathtub is situated. The plumbing installation depends on the type of bathtub, so it’s important to read the manufacturer’s instructions and contact a professional if help is required.

Secure Tub in Place

Once the plumbing is connected, slide the new tub into place and gently lower the tub. Ensure the bathtub is level, then attach it to the wall on all sides.

Install Tiles or Prefab Wall

Complete the process by finishing the wall where the tub was removed. You have a few options, including: 

• Finishing the wall with drywall and paint 

• Adding tile to the dry wall 

• Installing a prefabricated wall
