How to Paint a Brushed Concrete Floor
The beautiful weather will be here soon and you’ll want to get the best use out of your outdoor spaces. Whether you enjoy spending time on your porch, balcony or patio, these outdoor living areas deserve to be refreshed and enhanced for summer. Why not start with the flooring?
If you have a concrete floor in the basement, you can use these same steps. However, these instructions are NOT for garages in which cars are parked, nor for mechanically smoothed concrete.
A Few Tips Before You Start
First, make sure that the concrete is not releasing moisture. To check, lay out a 2 x 2 foot plastic sheet on the floor, securing all the sides. After a few days, look for any wet traces that may have formed under the plastic. Moisture can make it difficult for paint to adhere and will make the finish less durable. For exterior flooring, make sure that it is at least 10°C outside for three consecutive nights before painting. If you follow these tips, your brushed concrete painting project is sure to be a success!
Steps to Follow
Clean the Concrete:
Before painting your brushed concrete floor, it’s important to properly prepare the surface for optimal paint adherence. The first step is to thoroughly clean the concrete. We recommend using Premium Asphalt & Concrete Cleaner. Scrub with a stiff-bristle brush and rinse well.
Clean a second time with TSP Plus All Purpose Liquid Cleaner. This step is crucial to remove all traces of dirt, grease, mould or any other substance that could affect the paint’s adherence. Following these steps will ensure best results.
Seal the Concrete Surface:
When the surface is clean and dry, it’s time to apply concrete primer to improve the paint’s adherence. We recommend BeautiTone Interior/Exterior Acrylic Concrete Bonding Primer, with Series 79 100% acrylic floor paint, for greater adherence. This paint is formulated for covered areas that are protected from the elements, like a porch. Apply an even coat with a roller or paintbrush and let it dry completely. This step is essential to maximize the paint’s adherence and make the results last longer.
For outdoor areas that are exposed to the elements, like a patio, we recommend BeautiTone Interior/Exterior Modified Alkyd Urethane Porch and Floor Paint, with all-in-one primer. Apply two even coats for a durable, wear- and weather-resistant finish. This step will make your brushed concrete floor look fresh and aesthetically pleasing while protecting the surface from future damage.
Taking care of your brushed concrete, whether indoors or outdoors, is a great starting point to creating a space where you can relax.
