5 Tips for Painting a Ceiling Like a Pro
Do you know how to paint a ceiling so that the colour is even and opaque without having to pass the roller over it for the umpteenth time? Before climbing your stepladder, here are five tips for a better, nearly professional-looking result!
Let’s face it, painting a ceiling isn’t the most fun task. But it’s an important one. After all, the ceiling is the fifth wall! When done well, the finish will look beautiful for years to come and will really maximize the brightness of the room.
Pick the Right Time to Paint
Thinking of tackling this job after a long day at the office? It might be better to wait until tomorrow, in the light of day. Natural light or good lighting (if the room is dark) is the key to a flawless finish. Too eager to get started? Use blue ceiling paint that turns white when it dries for best results.
The room should be between 17 and 20°C so the paint has time to spread and level before drying.
Choose a Quality Paint Suited to the Task
Have leftover paint lying around? Don’t use it! It’s important to use quality paint. Ceiling paint 770-00 is the most popular BeautiTone option but there are also other options: the Designer line with matte finish (ideal for a bathroom) or the Pro line with ultra-matte finish for the budget-conscious.
What colour? White is definitely the most popular ceiling colour, but you can be more daring if you wish: dark blue, anthracite gray or even black will create a more intimate mood while a lighter shade than the walls will give the room more height while still being harmonious.
Ready the Space
Before you start, it’s important to prepare the space. If possible, empty the room completely. If not, move the furniture or cover it with a sheet. Remove the light fixtures, curtains and any wall decor.
Edge in Sections
Should you do all the corners with a paintbrush before using a roller? Not necessarily, say the BeautiTone experts. Edge up to 10 feet at a time, then pass the paint roller over that section.
Apply One Coat at a Time
Using a quality roller (10–15 mm), start from the corner nearest a window, at a 90-degree angle to minimize light reflection. Cover the ceiling in one go so that the paint dries evenly. Tip: Using a “dry” roller, lightly smooth the lines in the freshly painted section, then move on to another section.
Be patient! Wait until the paint is completely dry before applying a second coat.
