Backyard Projects: Decks

A beautifully designed deck is where your home and outdoors blend together. A deck can introduce new living space to your home and give you that perfect spot to relax and unwind or host family and friends. Designing the perfect deck for your home is an exciting time but planning and construction can often be challenging. Home Hardware is here to help!

Unlike ready-made deck kits, our Backyard Projects Premium Deck Packages include a wealth of custom choices to suit your tastes and fit your budget. Whether you want a slightly raised or fully raised deck, or even a deck with a pergola, one of our Backyard Project experts are here to help.

Step one Choose Your Deck Type

Slightly Raised Decks

If the main living area of your home is at or near ground level, then a Slightly Raised Deck Package may be your best option. Access points to the kitchen and/or living room are easily integrated, and you can build your deck in a way that best blends in with your existing landscape design. A slightly raised deck (vs. fully raised) keeps you connected to your family, friends and pets while enjoying your outdoor living space.

Step two Choose Your Deck Material

Pressure Treated Decking

A cost-effective choice, pressure-treated wood delivers the look and feel of natural wood, along with some of the toughness and durability of composite or synthetic materials. Strong resistance to bugs and other pests helps give pressure treated decks a long lifespan, often up to 20-years with proper care. Pressure treated boards are also easy to work with and can be stained or painted almost any colour you like. Home Hardware's Backyard Projects uses high quality pressure treated wood to help ensure your deck boards have fewer knots, a straighter grain, and less tendency to warp.

Composite Decking

Composite decking offers you a low-maintenance backyard deck option while mirroring the rich beauty of natural wood. There's no need to stain or paint, and it can withstand extreme winter temperatures without splitting or splintering. Composite decking is also highly resistant to mold and fungus, and it will not fall prey to termites or other pests. A wide variety of colours, shades, patterns, and surface textures are available to suit the style and design of your home.

Cedar Decking

A long-time favourite of decking purists, cedar offers a deep, rich colour with natural resistance to rot, decay and pests. It also repels moisture, which means your deck boards are less likely to twist or warp. Compared to other natural woods cedar tends to need less maintenance, but that's partially up to your style preference. Some people prefer a rustic, unstained deck, but it can also be finished for a truly beautiful appearance. Cedar is very versatile and DIY friendly, allowing different stains, bleaches, colours, and translucent finishes to achieve the look that’s right for you.

Raised Decks

If your home has a raised bungalow or walkout design with the main living area on the second floor, then a fully Raised Deck Package is likely your best option. The deck will attach to the second story and be supported by sturdy posts anchored into concrete footings set into the ground. Access points to the kitchen and/or living room are easily integrated. A great bonus to this type of deck is that it creates an additional unique living space underneath that is protected from the elements.

Decks with Pergolas

A pergola will add much needed protection from the sun, so why not build it together with your new deck? A Deck with Pergola Package is quicker, easier, and more cost-effective than adding a pergola later. And while shade is the primary benefit, you can also add lattice or a trellis with hanging vines for increased privacy. Accent options are almost limitless: fans, patio lanterns, string lights, decorations, plants, and other accessories can be introduced to the overhead structure to create mood and ambience.
