Guide to Houseplant Success
Watering
How to Check Soil Moisture:
Poke a pencil 2 inches into soil. Coated with soil? Skip watering. Clean and dry? Watering time. Check soil moisture regularly since plant and pot size, sun exposure and humidity levels affect how much water a plant needs.
Overwatering leaves yellow and drop, roots turn brown or moldy
Underwatering flowers and foliage wilt, soil cracks and separates
To help make watering easy, pick a soil that contains coir, like Miracle-Gro® Moisture Control® Potting Mix. Coir is a natural fibre that holds onto water and releases it only when plants need it.
Lighting
Houseplants like bright, indirect light. Needs vary by plant, so check care instructions for details. Tropical plants, especially, crave light. Give them a boost with extra windowsill time or with an indoor grow light. Moist air is good for plants, too. Keep them away from heat registers and radiators, and add a humidifier to raise levels.
Feeding
Plants are like people – they need food. Plants pull their nutrition from the soil. Over time, this leaves the soil tired and depleted. To keep plants green and growing, it’s important to feed them regularly with Miracle-Gro® Indoor Plant Food. Simply pump Miracle-Gro® Indoor Plant Food directly onto soil before watering.
Repotting
Give roots room to grow by moving plants into a new, roomier home. Here’s how:
2. Gently separate matted roots. If you need to, cut into the root ball in 2 or 3 places.
3. Add a layer of potting mix to new pot. Insert plant, and fill with more potting mix. Press mix down lightly.
4. Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain. For best results, feed regularly.
When to Repot: Repot when a plant is root-bound, with roots winding around inside the pot. Also, repot when roots are growing out of the pot’s drainage holes, or if the bottom leaves of the plant yellow and drop.
