Modernize Your Tiny Bathroom with Creative Ideas from Rebecca & Mike
Renovating any bathroom is a challenge. Renovating a tiny bathroom can be an even bigger challenge. Your space is limited, which in turn can limit your fixture and design options…unless you get creative! Rebecca and Mike’s tiny bathroom sits on the main floor next to their kitchen. That makes it the go-to bathroom for guests, which means it really needs to present well. It didn’t. The floors were cracking, the walls were tired and worn, and the old vanity just magnified all the other imperfections. So they made a wish list and got in touch with their local Home Hardware store for assistance. Once they had all the right tools and products for their reno, Rebecca & Mike got to work. Here’s what they did:
Hexagon Penny Tile FlooringPenny tile seemed like a perfect way to modernize the space while retaining some classic old-world charm. We found the perfect white hexagon design, and it comes in netted sheets for easy installation. For grout, we spiced things up with a terracotta colour. Applying it was a little nerve-wracking because it looked really red when wet, but it dried to a perfect shade of clay.
Warm Creamy WallsWe discovered unfinished walls under the wainscoting, which meant we had to install new drywall for the whole bathroom. This took a while. Cutting the pieces, putting them up, taping, mudding and sanding with dry times in between made for a slow process. I took advantage of the time to pick out a gorgeous BeautiTone paint colour ( Powdered Donuts). Whites can be tricky as undertones can surface once the paint dries, but this one turned out warm and creamy—a perfect complement to a space with no natural light.
Modern Vessel SinkThe eye-sore-vanity was next to go. In its place we put up a floating wood shelf and a vessel sink. Finding a sink that would fit this tiny space was a challenge, so we were thrilled when we spotted this sleek looking model that really emphasizes clean, seamless lines. The end result makes the bathroom appear bigger, and it also made room for a cute basket or stool under the sink!
Classic Style ToiletThe toilet probably didn’t NEED replacing, but since we’re updating everything else it totally made sense…right? Who knew picking out a toilet was a thing, but it is! We looked at straight toilets, curved toilets, short toilets, skinny toilets, detailed toilets, wall mounted toilets…there are so many options. We chose a toilet that felt a bit ‘old world’ and had a certain charm to it (yes, I said our toilet has charm).
5. Boho Decor
The vibe we went for was modern Boho, with organic, natural and neutral accents. The grout acts as a grounding shade, and the shelves above the toilet allow for colour and greenery. We also added a few bathroom accessories that introduced some different textures, along colour touches of gold, white and wood. These little accents and accessories ultimately made a huge difference.
We’re so happy with how our tiny bathroom turned out. This was also our first time using BeautiTone paint and it looks amazing! We keep walking past the open door saying, “wow, we did that!”. I love that the space is natural enough to switch up the décor down the road: interchangeable is mandatory when you’re a chronic rearranger like me. Updating our tiny bathroom was a learning experience, and we can’t wait to apply the new skills we learned to our next project.
