Interior Door Styles
Interior doors come in a wide variety of designs and materials. Let’s start by exploring the three main door styles or categories.
Interior Door Types
Interior doors come in a wide variety of door types. Each type functions/opens differently, offering a unique solution to certain room configurations or dimensions.
Interior Door Materials
Interior doors are made from a variety of materials and may include metal and glass for added style and/or functionality. Here are the three most common materials.
Solid Wood Doors
Heavy and soundproof, these doors display real woodgrain and are paintable and stainable. Solid wood offers traditional style and warmth. Different wood species offer various looks at various price points.
Engineered Wood Doors
These doors are affordable, long-lasting and durable. Examples include medium- density fibreboard (MDF) and hardboard. The absence of a woodgrain texture makes engineered wood doors easy to paint.
Composite Doors
This affordable style is made with a wood-based compound that mimics the look and feel of real wood with minimal maintenance. Solid core and hollow core doors often have a composite exterior skin.
Design Features & Sizing
Interior doors are available in a variety of off-the-shelf options, or customized special-order choices (typically for non-standard sizes or colours). Here are basic features to consider when choosing a door.
Solid Core
Solid core doors have the look, feel and durability of solid wood without the cost. Offers security, noise resistance and fire resistance.
Hollow Core Doors
Hollow core doors are lightweight and less expensive than solid core doors. They’re easier to install but offer less security, sound blocking and fire resistance.
Pre-hung vs. Slab
A pre-hung door includes a frame- mounted door and hinges and is ready to install. A slab door is sold without frame, hinges or handle set.
Standard Height
Standard door heights are: 80”, 84” and 96” (203, 213 and 244 cm). Special order doors are available in custom heights.
Standard Width
Standard door widths are: 18”, 20”, 24”, 28”, 30”, 32” and 36” (46, 51, 61, 71, 76 and 91 cm). Special order doors are available in custom widths.
Door Thickness
Standard thickness doors range from 1-3/8” to 1-3/4” (3.5 cm and 4.5 cm). You may be able to get a different thickness by ordering a custom door.
