For optimal safety consider installing both
photoelectric smoke detectors and
ionizing smoke detectors. Photoelectric technology detects visible fire particles associated with slow smouldering fires, while ionization technology is better at detecting fast flaming fires.
Some smoke alarms combine both, along with a carbon monoxide sensor to offer triple protection. A
talking smoke detector adds a voice warning to help reduce confusion and
identify different types of dangers. Some units also include a safety light to help guide your exit, or an LED strobe light to alert hearing-impaired people to danger. If you have a garage or attic, you might also consider a
heat alarm that responds to high temperature rather than smoke.
