Maintaining a healthy lawn and garden requires care and maintenance. Part of that maintenance involves strategic inputs as the season or situation dictates. Lawn fertilizer should be applied in early and late spring, then again in late summer and late fall. In general, established trees and shrubs only require an occasional layer of compost or manure. If damaged by pests, disease, or extreme winter weather you can apply a high-nitrogen shrub fertilizer or tree fertilizer the following spring just before the buds open. For your garden, bloodmeal, fish fertilizer, and worm castingsare all high in nitrogen and organic materials. Bone meal will add phosphorous and calcium, and hen manure is available in different formulations to meet specific needs. You can do a soil test first to identify any deficiencies.
Weeds are a recurring issue in most lawns and gardens. Weed barriers can help keep them out of certain areas, and a wide variety of herbicides and weed killers are available for different applications. Natural weed killers and pet-safe weed killers are recommended for any areas that are accessible to your kids and pets.
