Lay Down Floors Like A Pro with the Right Flooring Tools & Accessories

Whichever type of floor you’re installing, having the right flooring tools will make the job go a lot easier. A good flooring installation kit should include a mallet, tapping block, pull bar, and expansion joint spacers. A multi-purpose flooring cutter will quickly shear through vinyl, laminate, or engineered wood. You’ll also want a sharp utility knife for cutting overlaps and trimming edges. If you’re laying down a tile floor, a tile cutter will deliver precise cuts, and a pair of tile nippers can cleanly trim away excess for matching up corners and edges. Flooring underlay is also essential. For most rooms a breathable foam underlay works best. For bathrooms, basements, and other high moisture areas you’ll want an underlay with a vapour barrier.

You also need to protect the edges of your flooring. T-moulding provides a safe overlay between two even sections of floor, and a reducer strip does the same for two uneven sections. Base cove moulding serves to join up the edge of your floor with the wall. If you’re redoing the stairs as well, consider a stair tread and stair nose moulding to protect the steps from nicks and scrapes.
