Waterproof & Water-Resistant Flooring: Helping clients make sense of the options
Water can cause problems with flooring and this is why waterproof and water-resistant flooring options are gaining in popularity. Home Hardware has partnered with top flooring providers to bring waterproof hard-surface flooring options to homeowners as well as information and product knowledge. This article will help dealers, store associates, contractors and homeowners understand the new flooring options and make wise choices. Waterproof flooring isn’t just about the obvious choices such as rigid core SPC, but also vinyl, laminate and even water-resistant engineered wood options.
Benefits of Water-Resistant and Waterproof Flooring Even if you’re installing flooring in a room that’s not supposed to get wet, water-tolerant flooring will expand and contract much less (or none at all) than regular stuff with seasonal changes in humidity. And of course, this kind of flooring also withstands spills or leaks better than anything, should they ever happen. Using water-tolerant flooring is a no-brainer in bathrooms and kitchens, of course, but it’s also an excellent choice for basements. Water-tolerant flooring can be installed in any room or level of a home, it will look better for longer (all else being equal) and is much less likely to develop raised abutting edges over time from moisture absorption.
Waterproof vs. Water-Resistant When it comes to finished flooring, waterproof options won’t absorb moisture or swell, even when submerged for long periods of time. Water-resistant flooring, by contrast, is similar in that it remains unaffected by moisture but only in the short run. Water-resistant flooring can absorb enough moisture over a period of hours or days of being submerged to cause problems.
One important part of waterproof flooring is the internal core used to make the flooring. WPC (wood polymer composite), SPC (stone plastic composite) and LVT/LVP (luxury vinyl tile/luxury vinyl plank) are all examples of water-resistant and waterproof internal cores around which flooring is built. In recent times the waterproof resilient category of flooring has seen the biggest growth in sales.
More on Flooring Cores Stone plastic composite (SPC) cores are one of the newest and most waterproof options going so you need to know about it. SPC cores are rigid, very dense and made mostly of limestone held together with binding materials though none of the foaming agents that cause consumer concern in other types of flooring. From time to time, you’ll encounter people who believe that WPC stands for “waterproof core”, but this isn’t true. WPC is only water resistant because it’s based on wood, so not quite up to the standards of SPC. You need to be able to explain this distinction.
In terms of finished flooring, SPC is used as a substrate for a class of rigid vinyl that typically looks like stone or hardwood, though much tougher thanks to the durable printed visible surfaces. Combined with waterproof cork or foam underlay, SPC delivers impressive results but only on truly flat subfloors because it’s rigid.
Helping Clients Choose Home Hardware has put together one of the best collections of waterproof flooring in Canada. Learn about the leading product types in this category and you’ll have better results helping your clients choose.
- Plank and tile: This is ideal for any room that may get wet, including basements, bathrooms and kitchens. Good plank and tile flooring products are fully waterproof so they resist swelling even if fully submerged. It can also be a floating floor so it can be installed over most existing floors and requires no underlay.
SPC plank and tile is rigid so it won’t allow underlying irregularities in the floor to telegraph through to the surface and is more stable and impact resistant than luxury vinyl or wood polymer core. Since it’s truly stable, SPC plank and tile can be installed in areas up to 4,000 square feet with no need for expansion transitions. Designs with a drop-lock system also make for an easy and cost-effective installation. Good SPC plank and tile comes with an attached one-millimeter-thick underlay built in, providing sound resistance and the ability to go right down over existing floors and subfloors.
- Water-resistant laminate: Home Hardware has laminate products made especially to take water. The core material is high-density fiberboard with edges sealed to prevent moisture penetration and the kind of lifting of the visible top layer that you see in many laminates that get wet.
- SPC engineered hardwood: You won’t see this kind of thing very often. This type of flooring offers the rare combination of real hardwood bonded to an SPC core, and also with a floating, click installation style. Although the core is completely waterproof, the surface layer of real hardwood still needs some protection from moisture and seasonal temperature fluctuations. No unheated cottages for this stuff.
- SPC luxury vinyl plank: Using the same SPC core as engineered hardwood but with vinyl as the visible layer, this luxury flooring is suitable for use in any room, home or unheated cottage. Anti-microbial and anti-scratch treatments are part of this flooring.
- Manage Client Expectations: Nothing in life is perfect and this is why you need to mention the drawbacks of every flooring option you suggest. One of the biggest sources of disappointment for homeowners is a flooring option that shows dirt more obviously than expected. This is why you should suggest that homeowners buy a single box of the flooring they think they want, laid this flooring down temporarily, then live with the small section for a while to see if it’s really what they can be happy with.
Even when using a flooring product that’s waterproof, the other parts of the flooring system such as subfloors and adjoining walls could be damaged in a deep and extended flood. Be sure to explain that while waterproof flooring will completely resist spills, water-related accidents and pet messes, a full-blown flood with standing water from a failed pipe, dishwasher or washing machine for extended periods of time might be another matter.
