In a world mightily obsessed with social media, contractor Wayne Wittal isn’t caught up in it. “We don’t pay a lot of attention to social media,” he says. “Most of our work comes from word of mouth and repeat customers.”
The new president of DW Builders in Kamloops, B.C., says he focuses on “reputation, quality, and loyalty.” That’s what Wayne’s father, Doug, who founded the company in 1980, always concentrated on. Doug retired last September—as did his business partner, Mark Paulson. So, it’s a changing of the guard at DW Builders, without the business output or attention to quality changing one iota.
“We let our product speak for itself,” says Wayne. The company is versatile, too, bringing top-notch expertise to light commercial, custom homebuilding, and renovations.
How does DW decide where the opportunities are in those three quite different sectors? The market decides, Wayne says. “This past year (2022) was red-hot so we did a lot of spec homes. Some years, depending on the market, we’ve done mostly commercial.”
DW Builders has an ongoing contract with the City of Kamloops for civic work. “We’ve worked on their buildings, their swimming pools, the airport.” DW recently won a Thompson-Okanagan Commercial Building Award for their work on the Canadian Flight Centre of Kamloops.
