Like all contractors, Oscar has seen energy-efficiency codes tighten up over the years. He’s up to R22 in the walls—usually sprayfoam—and R60 or R70 cellulose in the attic. “Those are the basics.”
He’s barely touched solar panels. Not with Manitoba having some of Canada’s lowest hydro rates. Most of his projects are heated by forced air electric, with wood stoves as a secondary heat source.
When it comes to building supply stores, Oscar is partial to Selkirk Home Hardware Building Centre, not too far away from his home territory. “I’ve been dealing with them for about ten years, steadily. Their customer service is second to none. They treat you like they’re your friend. You are on a personal level with them—it’s not just business.”
