Why a Basement Subfloor?
The term “subfloor” describes any structural surface meant to sit under a finished floor, but basement subfloors over concrete work differently than above-ground wood frame subfloors.
Basement subfloors perform two important functions. First, they increase the level of insulation for warmer feet in winter; and second, they prevent basement air from coming in contact with cool concrete and condensing during humid times of the year. This is especially important if carpet is planned for the finished floor, but advantages do extend to all flooring options. Hidden floor condensation is one reason so many finished basements develop musty odours as they age, but basement subfloors can prevent this.
