PRO Tool Review: MILWAUKEE® High Torque Impact Wrench Kits

In this issue, I have the opportunity of reviewing a pair of Milwaukee® High Torque Impact Wrench Kits.

Both Milwaukee® torque wrenches offer the wonderful durability and the fit and finish they are famous for. The control switches for forward and reverse are comfortably positioned at the top of the grip and provide a trigger locking function. The motors are the famous Milwaukee® POWERSTATE™ brushless motors, and the units can be powered by any Milwaukee® M18™ battery. They even have built in work lights. The triggers are variable speed, and the handles are covered in premium rubber for improved grip. Both wrenches are heavy duty with torque ratings as listed below.

Both tools performed flawlessly in every test I conducted. I personally didn't own any 3/4" drive sockets so I had to borrow them from a friend. That friend was very impressed with the 3/4" drive wrench which he tested for me as well. Make no mistake, both models are serious, professional tools.

First, I reviewed the 3/4" wrench. (1239-329)

The anvil is square drive with thru-hole. Maximum of 1,200 ft-lbs of fastening torque and 1,500 ft-lbs of (in Milwaukee’s® words) nut-busting torque, this is the best performance in its class. At a total length of only 8.6" it allows for work in tight spaces, and weighs in at only 6.3 lbs. The tool is customizable using the Milwaukee® ONE-KEY™ system which allows the operator to customize torque options, track for location and allows tool lockout remotely from the app. Programming for torque settings is done easily with your cell phone, and the tool itself has 4 scroll-through performance buttons. Using this feature, the user can set predetermined set-ups for specific fasteners and materials and have complete control over output speed and power for each of these buttons. The tool has on-board memory for these pre-sets that negates further cell phone use. What a system!

Then the 1/2" wrench. (1239-331)

A square 1/2" friction ring anvil is standard. With up to 1,000 ft-lbs of fastening torque and 1,400 ft-lbs of (here it comes again) nut-busting torque. At 8.4" in length this is the industry's most compact cordless High Torque Impact Wrench. 4-mode DRIVE CONTROL™ is included with this wrench as well, although they come pre-set for greater convenience. One is a bolt removal mode which slows to 750 rpm once the fastener has been loosened, so no more flinging wheel nuts all over the place. Milwaukee® claims to remove high torque fasteners twice as fast as its competition.

Both kits include 2, M18™ XC5.0 Resistant batteries, an M18™ & M12™ multi-voltage charger and a carrying case.

Reasonably priced and built to last, I definitely give either of these Milwaukee® M18 FUEL™ High Torque Impact Wrenches my TINTO recommendation (Tools I Need to Own).
