Colin Wellum is the son and also the grandson of chiropractors, back in his childhood home of southern Ontario. He grew up in the Waterdown area, now part of Hamilton.
He got his first taste of carpentry and renovating at his family’s cottage, where there were always things to be fixed. A great wood shop teacher was also influential.
“I found building came naturally to me,” Colin says. “Mr. Banting had run his own business—his specialty was log homes. He’d teach us kids how to peel, scribe, notch, and roll the logs. And he would also teach us stick-frame construction.”
“We even built a couple of log homes up in Bancroft, Ontario, (a couple of hours northeast of Toronto). He’d be paid for the materials but the clients knew that it would take longer, because he was instructing his students. They liked the process!”
How did this southern Ontario carpenter get to a town in the Peace River area of northeastern British Columbia? He took a circuitous route, actually.
