This man, Richard Wachter, changed Marco’s life. “I was 17 at the time and my brothers were 18. We got hired by this gentleman to work as labourers. I worked as a chef’s assistant by night and was a labourer by day, during the summers.”
Mr. Wachter soon noted that Marco had a head for figures. In fact, Marco took accounting at both Algonquin College and Carleton University—in addition to working for Mr. Wachter every summer and during breaks from school. He became Mr. Wachter’s personal assistant.
“He was teaching me the construction management business,” Marco says gratefully. “I’d get on the train—or a plane—to go with him to important meetings.” The day Marco was finished with school, Mr. Wachter put him in charge of a big construction project in Barrie, Ont.
That project was complex, including six buildings, a condo, student residences, and a shopping centre. Wachfree Construction, Mr. Wachter’s firm, was giving Marco the experience that, today, he uses to manage his parents’ development and homebuilding business.
