Mitchell is off the tools right now. His job is to manage the company—and that is a full-time job in itself. “Actually, maybe once a year I will be on the tools,” Mitchell says, laughing. He misses it, like all contractors who have decided that the best focus of their time is strategy, coordination, and sales, not actually doing the building.
Mitchell is running a big firm in Seymour DesRoches Construction. They have about 15 employees on payroll right now, in the peak of the summer, and go down to nine or ten employees during the winter.
Their target work is, Mitchell says, “Anything construction-related that’s made of wood. I won’t get into steel structures.” At the time we interviewed him, Mitchell had some 30 jobs on the go. Everything from big jobs (three custom homes, four barns) to the replacement of four windows for a client.
