Doing the job right means using the right type of fastener for the task at hand. The threaded shaft of screws provide a strong grip and makes for easy disassembly. Wood screws are ideal for wood-to-wood fastening, but for most outdoor woodworking you'll want corrosion-resistant decking screws. If your project needs a frame you'll want structural wood screws, framing screws or framing nails. Non-wood materials require their own specialty fasteners such as concrete screws, machine screws and sheet metal screws. Nails are more permanent, but they're also more likely to bend vs. break. Common nails are suitable for most general construction, whereas box nails, brad nails and finishing nails have a thinner shank and less likely to split thinner wood. Drywall nails, flooring nails and roofing nails are task-specific and essential to a successful project. Staples, screw eyes and fastener strips are also available for more specialized tasks.
