Here’s How
For this project, the finished dimensions of our coffee table are 36" x 36". We wanted to create a rustic, industrial look so we chose to finish the wood with a mid-tone brown-black stain. You can also use a solid-coloured paint to achieve any aesthetic that will complement your decor.
Steps:
1. Assemble all the materials and tools for your project.
2. Measure, mark and cut the lumber. Our 36" x 36" coffee table requires the following pieces:
(8) pieces at 2" x 6" x 33" (these will form the top of the table and the bottom supports to which the caster wheels attach)
(4) pieces at 2" x 6" x 36" (these will form the sides of the table)
(7) pieces at 2" x 2" x 33" (these will form the bottom supports)
3. Take the four 36" side pieces and using the mitre saw, cut the ends at 45 degrees.
4. Once cut, take the four 36" side pieces and lay them down on a flat surface to form a box. Countersink and screw them together to form the table’s exterior frame.
5. Take six 2" x 6" x 33" pieces (these are the table top pieces) and position them in place within the interior of your frame.
6. Take three 2" x 2" x 33" support pieces and place one in the middle of your box and one on each inner side. Countersink and then screw to the underside of the tabletop and the side frame.
7. Take the remaining four 2" x 2" x 33" pieces. On either end of your box, place two of the pieces perpendicular to the supports you have just installed. Position one tightly against the frame and screw in place. Place the other piece parallel to this one, approximately 5" away. (A 2" x 6" support board will sit on top of this, so position it to line up with that.) Secure the 2" x 2" pieces with screws.
8. Place the two remaining 2" x 6" boards on top of these 2" x 2" pieces, flat side down, at each end of the inner table top. Attach securely with screws.
9. Use wood filler to fill any visible holes and seams. Let dry.
10. Use a palm sander to sand all sides of the table; wipe clean.
11. Stain all visible surfaces of your table, wiping with a rag to achieve desired effect/tint. Let dry.
12. Screw caster wheels in place on all four bottom corners of your table.
13. Your coffee table is now complete. Turn it right-side up, wheel it into place, and enjoy how it brings one-of-a-kind rustic style to your home.
