CartMaking Your Own Accent Table: A Solid Idea!
Want a new bedside or accent table to spruce up your decor? Don’t go shopping! Instead, why not roll up your sleeves and make your own? In addition to being ultra-strong and very trendy, these mini concrete tables look amazing. They will add an urban and industrial touch to your home without breaking the bank!
A mix of concrete, wooden dowels, a little paint and lacquer is all it takes. An easy DIY project to put on the list of things to do during the holidays. Let’s get to work!
Steps to Follow:
Before starting, decide how high you want your tables to be and then cut three dowels the desired height. For this project, we opted for four different heights, with the legs measuring 7”, 16”, 18” and 20”, respectively. You can have the dowels cut at your Home Hardware’s cutting centre.
5. To create a metallic dip effect using the gold lacquer spray paint, mark the section to be painted on each leg with painter’s tape (about 6” from the bottom). Spray the bottom of the legs with spray paint.
6. Place the table upside down on a flat surface. Remove the legs to apply construction glue in the holes, then reinstall them. Let them dry. Note that if the legs are already strongly affixed in the concrete, you don’t need to remove and glue them. Finally, you can paint the concrete surface, or if you want to keep the natural look, protect it with a matte varnish spray paint.
How to Determine the Amount of Concrete Needed
Before preparing the concrete mix, determine how much you will need according to the tabletop’s thickness. For example, a thinner concrete tabletop will require 15 lb. of the mixture; a medium-thick one will require 20 lb., while a thicker tabletop will require 25 lb. In any case, be sure to mix well to keep air bubbles from forming in the concrete. The thicker the tabletop, the longer it will take to dry. Don’t forget to account for this!
