Here’s How to Stencil & Paint Your Patio Pavers

The transformative power of paint is well known, so remember that it can work in your backyard, too! This DIY project takes existing concrete pavers or simple new ones, and gives them a whole new look with a stencilled paint job. Keep it simple with an uncomplicated geometric pattern or channel Majorca with a more detailed Mediterranean-inspired stencil.

Steps

1. Assemble all the materials and tools for your project.

2. Watch the weather forecast before beginning your project, as outdoor paint will need at least 48 hours to cure at temperatures above 5 ̊C and without exposure to precipitation.

3. Lay out your pavers or lift existing pavers from their site. Sweep, then clean and pressure wash them and let dry completely, ideally for 3-4 days in full sun.

4. Measure your pavers and create a stencil design on a Mylar sheet that is the same size as the pavers you are working with. Create a few copies of your stencil.

5. Position your stencil on a paver, weighted down or taped using painter’s tape if necessary, so that the stencil lies flat on the surface.

6. With stencil in place, paint the paver using a roller or sponge. Tip: Before applying paint to your stencil, wipe off any excess from your brush or sponge so that it feels almost dry to the touch; this is called a dry-brush technique. Let your painted pattern dry completely between coats.

7. Repeat painting your additional pavers and use additional stencils to keep your pattern and pavers tidy.

8. Once painting is complete, let dry for at least 24 hours before enjoying your newly painted outdoor space!
