Here’s How to Stain a New Deck
Protect your New Deck
After building a new deck, it's essential to protect it from moisture, damage, and the sun's harmful effects. Whether you decide to seal or stain your deck, this guide will walk you through the process.
What You'll Need
Steps
Step #1: Prep the Surface
Before you begin, be sure to thoroughly sweep or vacuum away any dust. Sanding isn't necessary unless there are slivers or rough areas you'd like to smooth out beforehand.
Step #2: Check the Weather
Make sure the forecast calls for ideal weather conditions. No rain in the forecast for 24 hours and day and night temperatures between 10° and 27° C.
Step #3: Use Wood Restorer
Start by dampening the entire surface with a hose. Then, apply Wood-Shield wood restorer and use a deck brush to scrub the solution into the wood, removing any mill glaze (the glossy finish on new wood).
Step #4: Check with a Moisture Meter
Use a moisture meter to confirm the wood is dry enough for staining or sealing, with a reading between 18% and 25%. If you don’t have a moisture meter, allow 2-3 days for the deck to fully dry.
Step #5: Select your Stain
Select from pre-mixed BeautiTone Wood-Shield stain colors in either solid or semi-transparent finishes or choose a tint that complements your home's exterior.

Step #6: Apply Stain to Your Deck
Be sure to apply the stain in the direction of the wood grain. Using a block brush helps you reach between the boards and gives you better control over the amount of stain you're applying. Apply the stain one board at a time using a back brush technique. Stain the entire length of the board to avoid dry spots and lap marks.
Tip: Stain in the shade, if possible, this allows a little more flexibility to move the stain before it dries. If staining in direct sunlight, you'll need to move a bit quicker.
Step #7: Dry Time
Let the stain dry for 24-48 hours before placing any furniture back on the deck. Enjoy your protected deck!
