Here’s How to Make a Backyard Washer Toss Game
Lawn games are great fun for family and friends alike. You can set them up for backyard BBQs, make them a focal point of parties, or simply spend some weekend time together. Lawn games are also a good way to keep your kids active and outside in the fresh air. DIY expert Keisha Boutilier decided to make a game of Washer Toss. Follow her easy steps below to build one yourself.
Our Game Time Inspiration
We wanted some really fun things to do in the backyard this summer. Lawn games were a huge part of my childhood and kept all of us kids happy and engaged in playful competition with each other. They definitely bring back some warm memories for me, and I really wanted to experience this with our kids as well. So we teamed up with our local Home Hardware for tips, tools and advice to build a game of Washer Toss. Here’s How to make it, and how to play it!
Washer Toss Game Play
Washer Toss involves two teams of two players each. The teams split up with a member of each team standing with an opponent at one of the game boxes (15 feet apart). Each player takes a turn tossing the washers to the other game board, trying to score points. The team that reaches 21 points first wins! Here's How we score the points, but feel free to make your own adjustments:
Each team gets 4 washers to toss
One member from each team takes turns tossing the washers
A washer in the box is worth 3 points
A washer in the cup is worth 5 points Similar to shuffleboard, only one team can score on each turn
For example, if Team A gets two washers in the box and Team B gets one, Team B's single washer cancels Team A's first washer: So, Team A is awarded 3 points for their second scoring washer
If both teams score the same number of points, it's a wash and zero points are awarded
Here’s What You Need*:
(8) 1” Flat Washers

Here’s How to Make it:
For our first box frame we cut our 2”x4” boards into four 17” pieces, using our mitre box and hand saw to make the 45-degree angle cuts. Then we repeated the process for our second box frame and sanded all the pieces down with the palm sander.
For our box bases, we used the circular saw to cut out two 17”x17” squares, then sanded them down.
To complete our frames, we screwed our 2”x4” pieces together and attached our plywood bases.
Instead of staining our boxes we chose white paint to really make them stand out on the lawn. Once dry, we applied a coat of clear polyurethane to create a good weather seal.
Next, we used a utility knife to cut out two 17”x17” squares from our artificial turf. Then we cut holes out of the centre to match the diameter of our PVC pipe. To complete the inside, we glued the turf and the pipes to the bottom of the boxes.
For our washer game pieces, we spray-painted each set a different colour, one for each team.
My favourite thing about making games like this from scratch is that you can really personalize them to suit your own family. Feel free to use different colours and patterns, and get input from everyone in the family. Be sure to check out the other two lawn games we made as well!
