Whether you’re painting a wall, refinishing wood surfaces, or smoothing out metal edges, sanding is an essential step in the process. Typically, you’ll begin with a coarse grit sandpaper for rough work, then move through medium and fine grit sandpaper to achieve a smooth finish. You can also find task-specific sanding screens and drywall sandpaper for sanding drywall compound or plaster prior to priming. A sanding block allows you to wrap the sandpaper around the block for faster, easier sanding. A sanding sponge essentially provides a built-in block with different sandpaper grits on different sides of the sponge. A hand sander offers an ergonomic grip and clamp system to keep the sandpaper firmly in place. A pole sander gives you access to upper walls and ceilings without having to use a ladder.
Steel wool is ideal for removing old paint, varnish, lacquer and shellac in conjunction with paint removers. The thin metal fibers can easily compress to any shape for easy use on contoured surfaces and hard-to-reach areas. Like sandpaper, steel wire wool is available in grades ranging from coarse #4 steel wool for heavy stripping to super fine 0000 steel wool for finishing and polishing.
