A good storm door offers many of the same benefits as a screen door while also protecting your home’s entry door. The large glass panes allow plenty of natural light, and the screen allows in fresh air during summer. However, an aluminum storm door is designed to protect against wind, cold, rain, and violent storms. The construction is much stronger and features reinforced corners and a heavy-duty torsion bar, hinges, and other hardware. Strong, tempered glass is also present to prevent easy breakage. You can also find retractable screen storm doors where the screen rolls up and stays hidden from view when not in use. This configuration essentially gives you a screen door on top and a storm door on the bottom.
Hanging a storm door can be a bit of a challenge. It requires a tight fit in order to provide maximum protection and energy efficiency. The door edges must conceal the gaps and hinges, and the bottom expander plate needs to cover any unevenness in the door sill. A handy DIYer may be up to the task.
