Whether you’re partitioning a room in your home or building a full-on addition, you’ll need to build a stud wall. That entails working with wall studs, framing and drywall or some other type of panelling. Wall studs are the vertical pieces of wood that help form the framework of your stud wall. Positioned perpendicular to the wall, the purpose of the studs is to provide strength to the frame. They also create space for insulation, wiring and plumbing. So remember to drill your holes for these items before attaching your surface wall. Spruce, hemlock and fir are the most popular wood choices for building stud walls.
Wooden wall studs generally come in either 2”x4” dimensions, which are typically used for interior walls, and 2”x6” dimensions (for exterior walls). Studs are usually spaced 16 or 24 inches apart, measured from the centre of the stud. This allows them to line up with the edges of standard 4’×8’ sheet materials such as drywall and plywood which are fastened to the stud frame after construction. Eight-foot lengths are standard, but you can also find various lengths up to 16 feet for use taller rooms.
