If you own a portable drill you’ll want a good drill bit set with plenty of assorted drill bits. Many different types of metal drill bits are available to suit different tasks and materials. High-speed steel drill bits (HSS) are general purpose workhorses that can drill through wood, PVC, fiberglass, and softer metals like aluminum. Titanium drill bits are also general purpose, but they produce less friction which helps them stay sharp longer. Cobalt drill bits are extremely hard and ideal for boring into tougher metals like stainless steel. Masonry drill bits and concrete drill bits are often made of carbide for use with rotary drills, impact drivers and hammer drills. Glass and tile drill bits feature a carbide tip to reduce the chance of chipping or cracking.
Many types of specialty drill bits are also available. A step bit features a stepped design that lets you use a single bit to drill holes of different diameters. An auger drill bit has a screw tip to start the hole, then pulls the bit through the material to quickly create a cleaner hole. A countersink bit allows you to drill pilot hole and countersink and counterbore the hole all in a single action. A spade bit or paddle bit features a flat blade with a sharp point for drilling large-diameter holes. A Forstner bit also bores large diameter holes, but it can also stop short to create flat-bottomed holes for seating dowels.
