Before starting any masonry project you want to make sure you’ve got all the masonry tools you’ll need. That includes a tuck pointer, cement edger, mason line, concrete float, and various trowels for shaping and scraping. A good sturdy cement mixer is also essential, along with cement mix and any relevant concrete moulds, footing forms and tube forms. Rebar and construction mesh will provide the inner support for your poured concrete. You can also find pre-formed concrete pads, footing blocks, deck blocks, and pier blocks. If you’re building a wall, a jack post can hold up sagging beams while you work upwards towards them. Expansion joints will help limit water penetration and reduce abrasion in the concrete during expansion.
Clay bricks, concrete bricks, and concrete blocks are suitable for most construction, but for a fireplace, pizza oven, or other outdoor cooking vessel you’ll need to use heat-resistant fire bricks and mortar mix. Many attractive options are available for landscaping projects that include pathways, including interlocking concrete pavers, bricks and stone. Polymeric sand is designed specifically for filling in the joints between them. Aggregates like gravel and stone chips can also work well for walkways and gardens.
